Shippin’ Out July 31 – Aug. 6: Bleach: Soul Resurreccion

Anime fighting game leads light week of new releases; Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet lands on 360 as Limbo bows on PS3.

626268 204389 Shippin Out July 31 Aug. 6: Bleach: Soul Resurreccion

The holiday gauntlet is almost here, but there are still a handful of low key release weeks remaining before Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Madden NFL 12 tip off a nearly non-stop parade of high-profile picks to keep gamers busy until 2012. This week’s biggest retail debut belongs to NIS America with the PlayStation 3 game Bleach: Soul Resurreccion.

Adapted from the hit anime, Soul Resurreccion is a 3D brawler along the lines of the Dynasty Warriors series. The game features 11 playable characters from the series, including main character Ichigo Kurosaki (along with his Hollow form), soul reaper Rukia Kuchiki, and arrancar antagonist Ulquiorra. Apart from fighting mobs of undead souls called Hollows, players can also customize the playable characters using the soul orb system, where players move pieces on a board and take over orbs to power up their characters of choice.

On the downloadable front, both the Xbox 360 and PS3 have aesthetically intriguing offerings on tap. For the Microsoft crowd, the 2D shooter Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet arrives as the third installment in the Xbox Live Summer of Arcade promotion. Meanwhile, PS3 owners will get a chance to try one of last year’s Summer of Arcade titles as Playdead’s Limbo makes its way to Sony’s downloadable storefront.

For further details on the week’s games, visit GameSpot’s New Releases page. The full list of downloadable games on the PlayStation Store, Xbox Live Marketplace, and the Wii Shop Channel will be revealed later this week. Release dates are based on retailer listings and are subject to change.

Shippin’ Out July 24-30: Catherine, From Dust

New release slate led by Atlus’ horror puzzler and Ubisoft’s god game; Black Ops Annihilation DLC for PS3, Dragon Age II: Legacy DLC, 3DS Pac-Man and Galaga Dimensions also hit this week.

The last week of July is a busy one for new games, as several high-profile games make their debut. New releases this week range from a horror-puzzle game from Atlus to fresh maps for Call of Duty: Black Ops for the PlayStation 3.

Leading the charge is the well-received Catherine for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Catherine has players navigating tricky relationship waters (and equally tricky puzzles) as Vincent. When the commitment-phobic protagonist’s girlfriend Katherine starts talking about taking their relationship to the next level, Vincent finds himself straying. While out drinking with friends, he meets a flirty bombshell named Catherine, whom–after a series of events he can’t quite recall–he wakes up next to the following morning.

In addition to helping Vincent make decisions to extricate himself from the situation, players will be called on to fight off the physical manifestations of his fears and guilt as he sleeps. Atlus is also including local competitive and cooperative multiplayer modes, as well as leaderboard support.

Also out this week is the second game in Microsoft’s five-title Summer of Arcade promotion, Ubisoft’s From Dust. Due out on Xbox Live Arcade and the PC, the game casts players as a supernatural force looking out for indigenous tribes in a seeming paradise beset by natural disasters.

By transporting land, water, vegetation, and lava around tropical environs, players can open up new pathways for villagers and protect them from earthquakes and other calamities. The various threats in the game can also be turned to the player’s advantage; for example, a well-placed tsunami could extinguish wildfires rather than sweep away villages.

PlayStation 3 gamers looking to pick up new maps for Call of Duty: Black Ops can grab the Annihilation downloadable content for Treyarch’s period shooter this Wednesday. It contains four new multiplayer maps and one fresh zombie level. The new killing spaces included in the downloadable content are Hangar 18, Silo, Drive-In, and Hazard. The zombie level is titled Shangri-La, described by Activision as “an exotic and mysterious map.”

Those who prefer fantasy to shooting can pick up new content for Dragon Age II this week for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. The Legacy content arrives on Wednesday and in it gamers will suit up again as protagonist Hawke, travelling to an ancient Grey Warden prison. Players will uncover additional details about his family history. Additionally, Hawke will visit new environments, battle new and “improved” enemies, craft a deadly weapon, and ultimately come face-to-face with a terrible horror.

Players looking for a new portable game this week can pick up Pac-Man and Galaga Dimensions for the 3DS. The bundle includes Pac-Man Tilt, Galaga 3D, and a handful of other titles from the seminal arcade franchises in one package.

A spin-off from the original maze-navigating, pellet-munching adventure, Pac-Man Tilt is a 2D platformer that will make use of the 3DS accelerometer. Players will be able to tilt the world as a way to solve environmental puzzles and evade roaming enemies. Namco Bandai will also be playing off Pac-Man’s spherical shape, as he is able to roll into a ball to speed through levels, bouncing off pinball flippers and springboards along the way.

Galaga 3D Impact will also be a riff on the tried-and-true arcade shooter formula and sees the spaceship-versus-aliens contest shift to the first-person shooter realm. The 3DS’ gyroscopic and 3D feature will factor into Galaga 3D Impact, as players will be able to physically move the system to take aim and fire at enemies before those enemies can destroy human civilization.

Lastly, Section 8: Prejudice is out this week for the PlayStation 3. Originally released in April on the Xbox 360, the PS3 version includes a number of features its console counterpart did not have. Section 8: Prejudice for the PS3 will include two new multiplayer game modes: Skirmish and Assault. Additionally, those who purchase the game during its debut week will score the Blitz Armor pack and the Overdrive map pack for free.

Shippin’ Out July 17-23: Call of Juarez: The Cartel, Bastion

New release slate led by Ubisoft’s modern shooter, Supergiant’s downloadable game for XBLA; Captain America: Super Soldier, Fallout: New Vegas DLC, Just Dance Summer Party also out.

619748 217237 Shippin Out July 17 23: Call of Juarez: The Cartel, Bastion

This week in new releases sees a host of new titles hit store shelves ranging from Ubisoft’s Mexican drug war game to Supergiant’s downloable role-playing title.

Leading the pack this week is Ubisoft’s Call of Juarez: The Cartel for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Unlike its predecessors, which were set during the Wild West, Call of Juarez: The Cartel takes place during modern times.

As the name implies, the game chronicles a drug war along the Mexican border, casting players as a female FBI agent, a Wild West sheriff type, and an undercover drug agent. Polish developer Techland said it chose the setting in order to capture a “relevant plot” that would connect with today’s gamers.

Also debuting this week is Supergiant Games’ downloadable action role-playing title Bastion. The release kicks off Microsof’s Summer of Arcade promotion, which includes From Dust, Toy Soldiers: Cold War, Fruit Ninja Kinect, and Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet.

As for the title in question, Bastion relies heavily on storytelling, offering more than 40 hand-painted environments that gamers explore to uncover the origins of Calamity, a civilization-destroying event.

Gamers looking to pick up a film tie-in title this week can grab Captain America: Super Soldier this week. The game arrives before its theatrical counterpart on Friday, and will hit the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, DS, with a 3DS version following at some point later on.

Super Soldier will offer an original storyline based on the Captain America film, which stars Chris Evans (Fantastic Four), Tommy Lee Jones (No Country for Old Men), and Samuel L. Jackson (Iron Man 2). Harking back to the comic franchise’s roots, Nazis will be the target of Captain America’s ire, as the shield-wielding hero squares off against his nemesis, Red Skull, in an effort to stop the evil machinations of the scientist Arnim Zola.

Also out this week on downloadable channels is the Old World Blues add-on for Fallout: New Vegas, as well as the PS3 iteration of Candygun’s zombie survival game Dead Block.

Lastly, gamers looking to boogie to a new tune in Ubisoft’s popular Just Dance franchise can pick Just Dance Summer Party this Tuesday on Wii. The game will include 20 new songs stemming from the ’80s, ’90s, and today, including Katy Perry’s “Firework,” Rihanna’s “Pon De Replay,” and Lou Bega’s “Mambo No. 5 (A Little Bit of Monika).”

606328 200670 Asia Shippin Out July 3 9: EDF: Insect Armageddon

While last week was all about the debut of Resident Evil on the 3DS and Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition on consoles, this week will be bombarded with a number of games hell-bent on invasions from extraterrestrials. First up, Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon will be out tomorrow for the Xbox 360 and PS3. Developed by Vicious Cycle Games, the people behind the Matt Hazard series and Dead Head Fred, EDF: Insect Armageddon will put gamers in the role of an EDF soldier as he kills all manner of giant ants, spiders, and other insects and bugs invading Earth. Bug-hunters will get access to 300 weapons and tools and a chance to play the campaign mode with two other people. Multiplayer options include a six-player mode where gamers battle waves of bugs until they all are overrun.

The English version of the Move-enabled Ape Escape game will be out exclusively for the PS3 via the PlayStation Network. The game pits players to rid the world of the alien ape invasion by using a slingshot to lure them and a net to catch them in a rail-shooter perspective. Players will use the Move controller to capture the many types of space-faring apes led by head honcho simian Specter. The game will be available for download tomorrow.

In lieu of the upcoming shooter Resistance 3, Sony will be releasing a Resistance Dual Pack for the low price of S$ 52.90($ 43.23). The bundle will contain both Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2. Head down to GameSpot’s reviews page of these two titles for more information. The bundle will be out tomorrow.

Finally, the zombie-slaying DLC game Dead Block will be out on Xbox Live Arcade. Players control either a construction worker, a traffic warden, or a boy scout as they survive waves of zombies using all sorts of armaments.
